4 Commercial Cooling Maintenance Tasks You Need To Do Today!

4 Commercial Cooling Maintenance Tasks You Need To Do Today!

At The Top Of The ListEveryone with a commercial cooling unit near Jefferson County needs to keep in mind the importance of regular maintenance.  Having a regular maintenance schedule reduces the overall repair burden on a unit and keeps it working efficiently for years.  Today, the technicians at American Services want to give you their top four maintenance tasks that you should be doing right now!  Let’s get started!

Maintenance Task #1 – Most business owners understand the importance of keeping debris out of the area where an air conditioning unit sits, but most don’t realize that there is a thorough cleaning process that should also be done.  This process is something that needs to be done by a professional because specialized tools are used to reach spots that out of reach normally.

Maintenance Task #2 – Your air conditioning unit should be regularly given an overall check of all systems.  This should include the blower fan, evaporator coil, and all other components that work to make your unit run smoothly.

Maintenance Task #3 – When your tech comes out to do your normal maintenance make sure they are looking for any refrigerant leaks.  These leaks can often start very small and go unnoticed if not checked for.  Catching a leak before it gets out of control can save you from an unexpected disruption in service and large repair bill.

Maintenance Task #4 – Be sure that all of your unit’s moving parts are being lubricated and inspected.  This includes that blower fan and all of the unit’s belts. Your tech should also be looking for and correcting loose belts along with replacing any that show fraying or cracking.

Why not take the time to make sure your cooling system is in perfect shape now?  This simple task will save you money and sustain the life of your unit for years to come!

Ventilation Options Designed To Keep You Cool

Ventilation Options Designed To Keep You Cool

Air Ventilation DuctAs the weather begins to transition into fall, finding cooling options that utilize less energy can help your business save lots of money on utility bills.  That’s why it’s so important to consider how well your building’s ventilation systems are being used to your advantage.  Today, the team at American Services wants to give you some ideas on how to ventilate your commercial space this fall.

Your first option is natural ventilation.  Natural ventilation is accomplished by opening doors and windows that allow for fresh air to flow through your space.  To create the best air flow, be sure to open two windows across the same space.  If possible, keep windows open at night and then close them up in the morning to trap that cool nighttime air in your space.

The next option to consider is fans.  Ceiling fans work great to create a nice breeze across a room that can make it feel about 4 degrees cooler than it actually is.  Box fans are another great option and can be place in a window to draw air inside a space. Using fans in combination with your open windows will cool your space faster.

Finally, consider a whole house fan.  Whole house fans are installed in attic spaces and are designed to bring air up through your space.  The warm air is then exhausted from your roof.  When using a whole house fan it is best to run it at night with the windows open.  Then, simply turn off your fan and close the windows in the morning. Whole house fans use minimal energy and can reduce the time you need to run your air conditioning during the day.

The Great Office Temperature Debate

The Great Office Temperature Debate

Young businesswoman freezy in officeWith the release of a recent study published in Nature Climate Change the age old office temperature debate has resurfaced between men and women everywhere.  You know what I’m talking about.  It can be the hottest day of the year, but don’t you dare grab short sleeves for your day at the office ladies!  Instead, many of us are faced with grabbing an extra sweater, blanket, or fuzzy socks just to keep warm at our desks.

According to the newly published study, the main reason why so many offices are frigid during the summer can be blamed an old “thermal comfort” formula that is still in use today.  This formula was developed in the 1960’s and is based on the needs of a 40-year-old, 154-pound male.  Since the time of this formula’s introduction, women have taken over more than half of the workforce in many industry sectors.  This leaves the old, out dated “thermal comfort” temperature settings a daily annoyance for many who work in a daily corporate setting.

The study also notes that the metabolic rate of women is slower than that of men, leaving them feeling colder than their male counterparts.  According Alan Hedge, an ergonomics professor at Cornell University, “Men, on average, have more muscle than women, and muscle helps to generate body heat.  Women tend to be less hairy than men. And functionally, men and women wear different clothing. The clothing that women wear tends to have much lower insulation value than the clothing men wear.”

Additionally noted by Hedge was the fact that people seem to do a lot less work when the temperature is set at 68 degrees as opposed to a more comfortable 76 degrees.   Plus, turning the thermostat up to 75 or 76 degrees would save a significant amount of energy and decrease carbon emissions.

Does the great temperature debate happen in your office space during the summer? If so, contact the experts at American Services heating and cooling near O’Fallon about smart ways to make your entire team cool and comfortable all year long!

Energy Star Ratings and Your Commercial Refrigeration Equipment

Energy Star Ratings and Your Commercial Refrigeration Equipment

Ecofriendly On ChalkboardIt’s no surprise that your Overland area commercial refrigeration units such as ice machines and freezers have very high energy costs.  For this reason alone, many users will look for a unit with an Energy Star rating as they replace old, out dated equipment.  Choosing Energy Star rated units will not only save you money, but these units also help the environment thanks to factors like water savings.  Here are few examples of how an energy star ice machine and refrigeration unit can save you money!

A typical Energy Star rated ice machine is 15 percent more energy efficient and saves about 10 percent in water.  This equates to about $130 in electricity and $18 in water savings on a yearly basis.  Other ways to help with your ice machine efficiency include shifting your ice production to the nighttime off-peak houses, purchasing a larger and more efficient machine, and avoiding water-cooled machines (water-cooled ice machines do not qualify for Energy Star ratings.)

A typical Energy Star qualified commercial reach-in style refrigerator or freezer can save you about 30% in energy.  This equates to about $55 per year in electricity savings for every solid door refrigerator, $70 per year in electricity savings for every glass door refrigerator, $175 per year in electricity savings for every solid door freezer, and $325 per year in electricity savings for every glass door freezer.  Other ways to save energy when using reach-in refrigerator units include turning off the door heaters, cleaning the coils, setting the defrost timers, and replacing worn gaskets.

As you can see, choosing to replace your old ice machines and refrigeration units with those that carry the Energy Star distinction can save you significant money on future energy bills.  To get more information on how Energy Star units can save your business money, contact the team at American Services for full details today!
