According to the newly published study, the main reason why so many offices are frigid during the summer can be blamed an old “thermal comfort” formula that is still in use today.  This formula was developed in the 1960’s and is based on the needs of a 40-year-old, 154-pound male.  Since the time of this formula’s introduction, women have taken over more than half of the workforce in many industry sectors.  This leaves the old, out dated “thermal comfort” temperature settings a daily annoyance for many who work in a daily corporate setting.

The study also notes that the metabolic rate of women is slower than that of men, leaving them feeling colder than their male counterparts.  According Alan Hedge, an ergonomics professor at Cornell University, “Men, on average, have more muscle than women, and muscle helps to generate body heat.  Women tend to be less hairy than men. And functionally, men and women wear different clothing. The clothing that women wear tends to have much lower insulation value than the clothing men wear.”

Additionally noted by Hedge was the fact that people seem to do a lot less work when the temperature is set at 68 degrees as opposed to a more comfortable 76 degrees.   Plus, turning the thermostat up to 75 or 76 degrees would save a significant amount of energy and decrease carbon emissions.
