Restaurant Refrigeration Equipment Efficiency

Restaurant Refrigeration Equipment Efficiency

restaurant refrigeration in MOAmerican Services refrigeration repair service near Fairview Heights knows that restaurants often use about 5 to 7 times more energy per square foot than other commercial buildings, such as office buildings and retail stores. High-volume fast-food restaurants may use up to 10 times more energy per square foot. Most commercial kitchen appliances are designed to be energy intensive. For instance, a typical electric deep fat fryer uses more than 18,000 kilowatt-hours of energy per year. This translates to an excess of $1,700 in electricity annually, for just one piece of equipment.

As energy costs increase, investing in energy efficiency is the best way to protect your business against these rising prices. You can reduce your restaurant’s energy consumption by following certain cost saving tips. Select Energy Star qualified appliances when you’re in the market for new equipment. Energy Star qualified commercial refrigerators and freezers can lead to an average energy savings of 30 percent.

Shrewd business people think in terms of life-cycle costs, which include purchase price, annual energy costs, and other long-term costs associated with the equipment. Higher efficiency appliances typically cost more up front, but significantly lower utility bills can make up for the price difference.

Refrigeration is often one of the most expensive tasks that certain businesses must account for. Having equipment that is running properly is very important. If you leave your equipment ON when it is not performing useful work, it costs you money. Properly maintaining and performing timely repairs is vital. Leaky walk-in refrigerator gaskets, freezer doors that do not shut, all add up to money wasted money. Don’t let everyday wear and tear drive up your energy bills.

The performance of your kitchen equipment changes over time. Thermostats and control systems can fail, or fall out of calibration and need to be readjusted. Take the time to do a regular thermostat check on your refrigeration equipment and reset them to the correct operating temperature. Features that could potentially save energy include improved insulation and components such as high-efficiency compressors and motors. restaurant maintenance in Missouri” href=””>restaurant equipment maintenance  in St. Louis knows that maintenance managers have many options to reduce power usage and extend the life of commercial refrigeration units including coolers, freezers, and ice machines. Here is a short but extremely important list of suggested maintenance tips that you may want to implement at your facility;

– Gaskets: refrigeration systems work hard to achieve proper product temperature. Routinely inspect the door gaskets or seals on all coolers and freezers. Check for tears, rips, or missing magnetic strips in gaskets. If gaskets are found to be worn out replace them immediately. You’re losing cold air, and making your system work harder to replace that air. This increases power consumption and lessens refrigerator systems’ life span.

– Door hinges and closers: most doors and hinges on refrigeration units close properly utilizing spring cartridges.  Be sure to inspect these mechanical hinges insure proper operation. Larger cooler and freezer doors- especially walk-ins normally use hydraulic door closers. Doors that are not closed all the way in this matter contribute to excessive run time, inefficient use of energy; shorten the life of the equipment and causes evaporator coils to ice up.

– Calculate accurate internal food temperature: using a product sensing thermometer, is far superior to an air sensing thermometer in refrigeration’s units due to rapidly changing ambient conditions. Refrigeration systems using an air sensing thermometer only reveal how cold the air is in a refrigeration unit at the moment you open it. There are situations when it does not give an accurate picture of a product’s actual temperature. Product sensing thermometers are much more accurate.

Commercial Refrigerator and Freezer Energy Saving Steps

Commercial Refrigerator and Freezer Energy Saving Steps

refrigeration services in MissouriAmerican Services refrigeration repair near Ballwin knows that the first rule in refrigeration operation is to work smarter not harder and save money with the following energy smart solutions;

Recognize that your refrigerator and freezer are not blast chillers-If you need to cool down large quantities of hot food quickly you will need a blast chiller. Refrigerators were not designed to handle this type of job they will have to work extremely hard to bring the temperature back up to the proper degree.

Place in a cool area-Place your refrigeration unit in an area where it will not get too hot. Putting it next to cooking equipment will only make it work harder.

Do not prop refrigerator or freezer doors open–   every restaurant employee has done at one time or another is to prop the door open to the refrigerator or freezer allowing cold air to escape. This will cause excessive energy costs, as well as jeopardizing the integrity of the food.

Keep proper interior temperatures at a steady setting-Most modern commercial refrigeration and freezer models will have externally mounted digital thermometers for easy monitoring. If your thermometer is set to low the condenser unit will run longer than it should, wasting energy and wearing out expensive condensers and other refrigeration components prematurely.  Another way to keep your equipment performing efficiently and with the least amount of energy is to   establish a regular preventative maintenance plan. Keep evaporator coils clean, commercial refrigerator and freezer condensers are a magnet for dust and grime which blocks air flow to the coils which equals increased energy costs.

Inspect door gaskets-Keeping an airtight seal is critical in keeping your refrigeration unit functioning properly and at the proper temperature. Worn gaskets will do just the opposite allowing warm air to creep into your refrigeration or freezer units that diminishes efficiency and increases energy costs. Clean all vents filters and screens of foreign debris, air circulation is required for your units to operate efficiently.

Select efficient motors-Be sure to replace refrigerator condensers or motors that have failed with high efficiency units these motors will operate longer with high efficiency performance and that means big energy cost savings.
