Heating and Cooling Replacement vs Cleaning

heating cleaningWe are now broaching the second post within the same subject of HVAC systems and whether or not to have them cleaned.  We ended the previous post on mold scenarios and how, obviously, if you have mold in your HVAC in St Louis near Fenton, then you need to consult an HVAC service company in St Louis in order to have it cleaned or to have someone referred to you for cleaning.

A few final mold pointers for you, found online, are as follows, “If you have insulated air ducts and the insulation gets wet or moldy it cannot be effectively cleaned and should be removed and replaced.  If the conditions causing the mold growth in the first place are not corrected, mold growth will recur.”  Now, we will move onto other scenarios by which it is wise to have your heating and cooling in St Louis near Fenton cleaned by professionals.  Say, for example, your ducts are infested with rodents, insects or other vermin.  You will definitely want to consult heating and cooling services in St Louis if that describes your situation.

A third and less unusual situation will involve your St Louis Heating and Cooling Ducts being clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles (more than the average system).  This describes an HVAC that definitely needs heating and cooling service near Fenton to be cleaned thoroughly for optimum performance.  “If any of the conditions identified above exists, it usually suggests one or more underlying causes. Prior to any cleaning, retrofitting, or replacing of your ducts, the cause or causes must be corrected or else the problem will likely recur.”  So, don’t let someone talk you into full replacement from the start as this will not necessarily address the cause of your predicament and will likely get you back in the same boat.

Don’t Forget Your Insurance When Heating Your Space

wood burning stoveWe talked, in the previous post, about the importance of insulation before setting out to heat a certain space.  The previous article, along with this one and the one to follow, will focus on a commercial shop environment and what we need to do in order to best heat your space.  Installation is one subject to consider, according to your St Louis Heating sales near Jefferson County.  “To choose an appropriate-size system for your climate, confer with a licensed HVAC installer. He will ask such questions as: How many walls does your shop share with a heated structure? What are the dimensions, and how high is the ceiling? Do you want to maintain a minimum temperature when you are not in the shop?”

Once you have the installation of your heating system figured out, as far as what and by whom, they you will want to speak to your local code inspector for home or business HVAC near Jefferson County.  This will help you narrow down your choices.  You will then prevent yourself from looking at and considering systems that your municipality restricts.  Also this will be a good time to ask your St Louis Heating installation near Jefferson County all about the legal installation of a system.

Insurance is important to consider as well.  “Some heat sources that pass the inspector’s muster may still be frowned upon by your insurance company.”  If you end up with something upon which your insurance company frowns, such as a wood-burning stove, for example, then you could have a mess on your hands when a claim comes through as being denied.  This is the case whether or not your heater was even involved!  So, yes, insurance checking is one of the most important  things to do before buying anything to heat your home or office.

Chimney Balloons and Other Heating Solutions

From your Heating Sales in St Louis near Belleville IL, we have spent the past couple post discussing some of the best practices that you may wish to follow in order to minimize heating costs for your commercial space this winter.  We already covered the importance of weather stripping and sealing areas of heat escape as best as possible, along with the potential use of space heaters in order to reduce commercial heating bills.  Now, we will move on.

It would be wise to close off unnecessary vents.  “Close vents in unoccupied rooms. If you have an office that’s not being used, shut its vents and doors. Why spend money to heat areas where no one’s working?”  Saving up to 14% on your heating bill is possible with the simple use of plastic.  That’s right, according to the research we recently conducted on behalf of your St Louis heating and cooling installation near Belleville, we found that by purchasing and using a transparent plastic film kit for covering windows and doors (obviously only those you will not need to open), you can save up to 14% on your heating costs.  According to a recent heating and cooling article found online, “The film is easy to install and adds an additional layer of insulation.”

If you haven’t yet noticed, the tone of this post and the two that precede it is mostly all about preventing air flow and heat escape.  Another way in which to accomplish this is by installing a chimney balloon.  “Maybe your office is located in a home with a chimney that doesn’t get used. Even with the flue closed, warm indoor air can escape. The solution: Install a chimney balloon to seal it.”

Eliminate Drafts for More Efficient Heating

energy efficientKeep your heating bills lower than they have ever been in the past.  There are things you can do to affect your heating expenses.  Eliminate drafts around electrical boxes on your outside walls. American Services in Bridgeton near Overland MO specializes in heating and cooling of commercial spacing and we have been writing on their behalf to help inform families on topics that concern you in your home.

What area of your home is known for draftiness?  Here is what one online article has to say on the subject, “Electrical boxes in your exterior walls are notoriously drafty because insulation isn’t always placed behind and around them correctly. ‘You want to try to stop air from flowing around the box and through the box,’ Rogers says.”  The way we can do that, according to your commercial heating business in Bridgeton near Overland, is to remove the cover plates and then fill any small gaps around the box with latex acrylic caulking.  If you are dealing with larger gaps that will make heating your home even more of an expense, then use a foam sealant instead.  After you close the gaps, then buy and install a foam gasket over the outlet or switch and replace the cover plate back the way it originally was.

Don’t worry about the cost involved in the above task, for the gaskets are so inexpensive, you can actually buy a two pack for pennies over the dollar.  The amount of money you will save over time to stop the warm air that you are investing money in to heat from leaking, will well outdo the expense of sealing up the gaps with caulking and gaskets.  If you need further advice from a heating and cooling business in Bridgeton, reach out to us at American Services today.

Avoid Heat Buildup in Your Home

coolingCooling your home in the most effective manner, means doing all that you can to avoid heat buildup within the space you wish to cool.  This concept applies not only to your home, but also to your office or commercial environment.  Anywhere you are trying to cool, really, can benefit from some of the following information from your American Services St Louis.  “Keeping the outside heat outside, avoiding heat-generating activities, and using spot ventilation can help keep your home cool during hot days.”

You can plan ahead when working in your yard.  Landscaping can be particularly helpful when you create shade for your house to sit in.  “To avoid heat buildup in your home, plan ahead by landscaping your lot to shade your house.”  Roofs can be most helpful when designed using lighter colored material that will reflect rather than attract the heat.  When you are working with insulation, the more the better to assist in keeping the heat levels to a minimum inside your home.   Also, consider the use of a radiant barrier, say some experts online.  Here is more advice taken straight from one expert article on behalf of your St Louis Cooling Experts at American Services near Ladue.  “On hot days, whenever outdoor temperatures are higher than the temperature inside your house, close tightly all the windows and exterior doors. Also install window shades or other window treatments and close the shades.”  Shades are magnificent at blocking out direct sunlight and actual heat that radiates from outside.

Cooking can also create a ton of heat inside your home, great for winter, but not when trying to cool your home or work environment.  On the hottest days try not to use the oven at all.  The microwave is actually the least heat creating source in your kitchen when it comes to cooking.  Try using that a much as possible when attempting to use the best form of cooling in your home.

Dehumidifiers Can Help You Avoid Mold Issues

Mold is something that grows in areas where there are high moisture concentrations like basements and bathrooms.  Once an area has be exposed to a mold infestation, the spores can spread quickly and even attach to other surfaces only to begin growing there as well.  The worst part about mold is that it can cause a number of health issues and can be hard to stop.  Today, the Fenton area heating and cooling experts at American Services wants to show you how the use of dehumidifiers can help you in your fight against the many issues that are caused by mold.

Dehumidifiers work to lower moisture concentrations in the air.  This reduced moisture level deters mold growth since mold likes to live in areas with high moisture levels.  Dehumidifiers work to deter mold growth very well when used in high humidity climates, basements, or specific areas where moisture build-up is prominent.

When shopping for a dehumidifier, it’s important to consider where and how the machine will be used.  You can purchase units that cover a single room or get one that will work to lower humidity levels throughout your building or home.  These units are are often called whole-house units and require installation by an HVAC professional.

Other ways that work at keeping mold at bay include:

  • Check for and replace any damages insulation around windows, doors, and water pipes.
  • Repair leaky roofs immediately.
  • Remove any rotting wood from around your structure.
  • Avoid standing water around your space.
  • Permanently fix any plumbing problems.
  • Run your air conditioner regularly, as it works as a dehumidifier when cooling the air.
  • Have your air conditioner maintained properly to avoid water pooling.

Deciding on a Bin or Dispensing Ice Machine Set-Up

ice cubes in scoop

Making the decision to use an ice bin or dispensing unit for your ice machine is a very personalized task.  Business owners will have to consider who is using the machine, what their needs are, and how to best fill those needs in a clean, sanitary, and convenient way.  Today, the team at American Services heating and cooling near Belleville are here to help you make this decision.  Let’s get started!

Ice Storage Bins – Ice storage bins are ideal for establishments that need to have a large quantity of ice on hand at all times.  The ice is then transferred to areas where it is dispensed from smaller storage bins.  A few of the basic features found on ice storage bins include: lots of storage, stainless steel finish, large doors, insulation, and drains.  When sizing your ice storage bin be sure that the unit you choose can hold 10-20% more ice than your machine can produce.  This will assure that you have plenty of ice on hand at all times and plenty of space to store it.

Countertop Ice Dispensers – Countertop ice dispensers are particularly helpful in self service areas like employee break rooms or hospitals.  These small units easily fit on a countertop and allow for clean, sanitary dispensing. A few of the basic features found on countertop ice dispensers include: small size, cup dispensing, and a lever system that reduces the risk of cross-contamination.  When using a countertop unit, you will either have to fill the machine with ice made by a separate machine or invest in a modular ice machine unit that can attach to the countertop unit where it sits.  To size your counterop unit properly, account for the fact that each person served from the machine will use 1.5 pounds of ice.

The Great Office Temperature Debate

Young businesswoman freezy in officeWith the release of a recent study published in Nature Climate Change the age old office temperature debate has resurfaced between men and women everywhere.  You know what I’m talking about.  It can be the hottest day of the year, but don’t you dare grab short sleeves for your day at the office ladies!  Instead, many of us are faced with grabbing an extra sweater, blanket, or fuzzy socks just to keep warm at our desks.

According to the newly published study, the main reason why so many offices are frigid during the summer can be blamed an old “thermal comfort” formula that is still in use today.  This formula was developed in the 1960’s and is based on the needs of a 40-year-old, 154-pound male.  Since the time of this formula’s introduction, women have taken over more than half of the workforce in many industry sectors.  This leaves the old, out dated “thermal comfort” temperature settings a daily annoyance for many who work in a daily corporate setting.

The study also notes that the metabolic rate of women is slower than that of men, leaving them feeling colder than their male counterparts.  According Alan Hedge, an ergonomics professor at Cornell University, “Men, on average, have more muscle than women, and muscle helps to generate body heat.  Women tend to be less hairy than men. And functionally, men and women wear different clothing. The clothing that women wear tends to have much lower insulation value than the clothing men wear.”

Additionally noted by Hedge was the fact that people seem to do a lot less work when the temperature is set at 68 degrees as opposed to a more comfortable 76 degrees.   Plus, turning the thermostat up to 75 or 76 degrees would save a significant amount of energy and decrease carbon emissions.
